Current Volunteer Opportunities

Shell Ambassadors

Shell Ambassadors are certified shell experts who have completed our 8-hour training program and assessment. The certification covers knowledge of Southwest Florida shells, interpretation of beach ecosystems, effective public relations, and response to legal and ethical dilemmas. Study materials are provided in advance.

Once you complete the training, you receive our blue Shell Ambassador shirt, which indicates to beachgoers that you can answer questions and identify shells. There are no specific hours or shifts required, but Shell Ambassadors who complete 20 volunteer hours on the beach receive a free Golden Olive membership (valued at $100).

Training days (8:30am to 5:00pm) are scheduled throughout the year. Lunch and continental breakfast are included with the $100 registration fee.

An advanced daylong certification course for Shell Ambassadors interested in additional training is available for $50. This program covers scaphopods, cephalopods, local avian fauna, invertebrates, our collections, reproductive and feeding habits of local mollusks, and more.

To register for a Shell Ambassador training, please email Outreach Coordinator Leigh Gay at lgay@shellmuseum.org or call 239-395-2233.
