The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum opened in 1995 and is a natural history museum with a primary focus on mollusks, their ecosystems, and conservation education. The Museum’s collection of shells numbers over 550,000 specimens, and the Living Gallery of aquariums (which opened in 2020) housed over 60 species of marine life until Hurricane Ian struck on September 28, 2022.

The Museum is now in a rebuilding phase, following major flood and structural damage as a result of the hurricane. Although closed for rebuilding, the Museum continues to educate and engage with the public through successful K-12 outreach programs, field education, online lectures and exhibits, research and scholarship, and other initiatives.

Gifts to the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum are 100% tax-deductible.
