Reopening Information

Welcome back!

Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, following the recommendations of state and local government and public health officials, is now open to the public at 50% capacity. We are beyond excited to welcome back our members, friends, and visitors. In order to keep everyone healthy and safe, we have established the following procedures:

  • All staff members and visitors will be required to wear a mask or face covering.

  • We will only accept credit cards and membership cards for admission. We will NOT process any check or cash transactions.

  • Credit card pin pads will be disinfected after each use.

  • Capacity in the building will be limited to 50% to promote social distancing. We will also limit the number of shoppers in the Museum Store at any time.

  • Hand sanitizer will be available at the Front Desk and the Museum Store check-out.

  • Educators will provide daily outdoor programming to offer visitors a variety of experiences.

  • We will continue to encourage regular hand washing. An extra hand washing station will be added near our touch pools.

  • As always, staff members are required to stay at home if feeling ill. Staff members will have their temperatures taken prior to starting work each day.

  • Plexiglass barriers will hang at the Front Desk, the Museum Store check-out, and at our touch pools.

  • The Museum will continue its high cleanliness standards, with surfaces such as counters, railings, door handles, elevator buttons, and chairs cleaned and disinfected throughout the day.

  • Our water drinking fountain will not be available for use. However, visitors can still access our water bottle filling station. We encourage visitors to bring their own reusable water bottles.

  • Guests are encouraged to maintain social distancing when accessing restrooms.

  • Floor graphics will instruct visitors where to stand in the front lobby as well as at certain exhibits in order to maintain safe social distancing.

  • Visitors will be asked to follow our one-way flow path through the aquarium and exhibit areas.

  • Our auditorium will be reconfigured to allow for social distancing while watching our movies.

  • Our shell crafting room will remain closed. We will provide take-home crafting kits.

  • Some hands-on exhibits may not be available to visitors.

  • Our fun and educational scavenger hunts will be available on our website for visitors to view on their phones or print at home. We will not have copies to hand out at the Front Desk.
