Development and Marketing Assistant


The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum in Sanibel, FL seeks a Development and Marketing Assistant. This is a full-time position reporting to the Executive Director with dotted line reporting to the Marketing Director. The Bailey-Matthews is a 501(c)3 non-profit educational organization, is now in its 26th year open to the public, and in 2020 opened a dynamic new gallery of living mollusks and other marine animals in 11 aquariums and two touch pools to accompany its renowned collection of nearly 1M shells from all over the world.



The Development and Marketing Assistant supports and helps to implement activities and initiatives to drive attendance to the Museum, build participation in educational programs, communicate and engage with members and supporters, encourage and facilitate philanthropic contributions, and grow community outreach in support of the Museum’s non-profit educational mission.  Working closely with the Executive Director and Marketing Director, the Development and Marketing Assistant is an essential team player in celebrating and communicating the unique and compelling blend of natural history, marine biology, research, culture, and related environmental themes that comprise the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum.


Main Scope and Activities:

  • Manage the membership program and support activities to grow and deepen membership

  • Maintain donor database and records, and manage systems for acknowledgments, renewals, and mailings

  • Support the implementation of marketing, communications, and outreach activities including social media, video, website, e-mail updates, newsletters, partnerships with local businesses, advertising, and media relations

  • Support creation and production of special events

  • Product-manage the Museum’s shell-identifying app

  • Support on-site communications needs including signage and promotions

  • Assist with market and visitor data collection and analysis


Excellent writing, speaking, and organizational skills. A personable attitude with abilities of diplomacy, fairness, honesty, and discretion is essential; a sense of humor is a plus; and a genuine interest in natural history, museums, and/or the role and impact of educational and cultural organizations is preferred.  A team player eager to collaborate with a small, dedicated, and creative staff in an often fast-paced setting. Comfort with a range of communications methods, digital platforms and technology, including the ability to quickly attain proficiency in Versai database software. Bachelor’s degree required.
