Shell of the Week: The African Fan Scallop

Aequipecten flabellum is an attractive scallop species (family Pectinidae), celebrated for the eye-catching colors of its shells, which include brilliant variations of red and orange with inclusions of white, gray, or black. African Fan Scallops may reach 50 mm (about 2 inches). The species lives off western and southwestern Africa, from the coast of Western Sahara south to Angola. The shells in the photo represent species number 13 in our “Scallops” display of the newly renovated Phase 1 of the National Shell Museum & Aquarium’s “Great Hall of Shells.” Stop at the Museum for a visit and check them out!
